Halka: A Masterpiece of Mystery and Crime

Aired on TRT1 in 2019, Halka (The Circle) is a groundbreaking Turkish series that departs from traditional mafia narratives by offering a complex, puzzle-like story. Produced by ES Film, the series is named after a mysterious criminal organization with three ring symbols, symbolizing a deep-rooted conspiracy that connects the pasts of two different young men.

The Story Detailed:

The narrative follows Kaan (Kaan Yıldırım), a young man who was recently set up and sent to prison. While behind bars, he receives a mysterious digital record showing the murder of his father years ago, an event that was supposedly a robbery. Simultaneously, Cihangir (Serkan Çayoğlu), the son of a powerful mafia figure named İlhan Tepeli, starts experiencing fragmented memories and visions that don’t belong to his current life.

Halka or The Circle

The paths of these two men cross when Kaan is offered a deal by the police to infiltrate İlhan Tepeli’s organization. As they investigate their intertwined pasts, they discover they are both victims of “Halka,” a shadowy network that has manipulated their lives since birth. The story explores themes of identity, loyalty, and the hidden power of women within a male-dominated underworld, as Hümeyra (Nazan Kesal) holds the most dangerous secrets of the organization.

Why Was Halka Cancelled?

Despite its “cult” status and high production quality, Halka was discontinued after its first season. The primary reasons were:

    1. Low Ratings: While the series had a very loyal and vocal fanbase on social media, its complex and slow-burn narrative didn’t resonate as strongly with the general TV audience at the time.
    2. Production Costs: The high cost of its cinematic production style made it difficult to sustain with the existing rating performance.
    3. Digital Transition Plans: Although there were plans and even script work for a second season on TRT’s digital platform, tabii, these plans eventually stalled, leaving the story unfinished.

How Many Episodes?

The series aired for exactly 19 episodes. It premiered on January 15, 2019, and reached its “season finale”—which later became the series finale—on May 28, 2019.
