Turkey Says Goodbye to the World Cup!
24 Years of Longing Ends Early: Turkey Says Goodbye to the World Cup!
The Turkish National Football Team has mathematically lost its chance to advance from the group stage after a 1-0 defeat against Paraguay in their second match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group D. Following a 2-0 loss to Australia in the opening game, the Crescent-Stars delivered a highly dominant performance in both encounters but failed to score, leading to an early and painful exit from the tournament.
2026 FIFA World Cup Group D | Turkey: 0 – Paraguay: 1
The crucial match took place in Santa Clara, California, kicking off at 06:00 Turkish time. Having suffered a 2-0 defeat against Australia in their debut, Turkey entered the pitch with an absolute must-win mentality. Despite controlling the rhythm and trapping their opponents in their own half for most of the game, the national team could not break the deadlock and suffered a shocking elimination before the final group fixtures.
Early Shock Ruined the Game Plan
The national team started the game with a cold shower at Levi’s Stadium. In just the 2nd minute of the match, Matías Galarza scored for Paraguay, putting Turkey at a 1-0 disadvantage. Right before the end of the first half, Paraguay’s star player Almirón received a red card. Facing a 10-man opponent for the entire second half fueled Turkey’s hope and increased the pressure even further.
Dominant Play, Zero Goals
The second half was a complete one-sided affair as Turkey besieged the Paraguay goal. Generating dangerous attacks from both the wings and the center, the Turkish team created clear-cut scoring opportunities but lacked clinical finishing. Just like the Australia match, the Crescent-Stars held the absolute possession and pitch superiority but left the field empty-handed due to bad luck and inefficiency in the final third.
Match Against USA Becomes a Matter of Prestige
Turkey remains at the bottom of Group D with zero points and is now officially eliminated due to head-to-head tiebreaker rules before facing co-hosts USA on June 26. Our World Cup journey, which came after a 24-year long wait, turned into a massive disappointment despite the passionate and high-tempo football displayed on the pitch.
