Ali Gürbüz: The “Mega Star” of Turkish Oil Wrestling
A true titan of the ancient sport of Yağlı Güreş (Oil Wrestling), Ali Gürbüz was born on October 26, 1987, in the Korkuteli district of Antalya, Turkey. For Ali, wrestling is far more than a profession; it is a profound family legacy. As the son of the legendary Kırkpınar Chief Pehlivan Recep Gürbüz and the grandson of the renowned wrestler Mehmet Öztürk, he represents a rare third-generation lineage of champions. Despite losing his father at a very young age, Ali rose to fulfill his destiny, earning the moniker “Mega Star” for his dominant presence and technical prowess in the “Er Meydanı” (Field of Honor).
A Giant in the Ring: The Journey to Grand Championships
Ali Gürbüz’s professional ascent reached a turning point in 2008 when he secured the first-place title in the “Başaltı” category at the historic Kırkpınar tournament, promoting him to the prestigious rank of Chief Pehlivan (Başpehlivan). His imposing physical stature—standing nearly 2 meters tall—combined with an agile wrestling IQ made him an immediate threat to the established order. He claimed his first Golden Belt in 2011 after a fierce final match against the veteran Recep Kara, a feat he successfully repeated in 2012.
The middle of his career was marked by both legendary triumphs and challenging injuries. His most iconic comeback occurred in 2019 during one of the longest finals in recent History. In a grueling 50-minute bout under the scorching Edirne sun, Ali defeated his formidable rival Orhan Okulu to secure his third title. He maintained this momentum into 2021, navigating through a tough bracket including names like Osman Özgün and Ertuğrul Dağdeviren, eventually defeating İsmail Koç in the final to solidify his status as a four-time Kırkpınar champion.
2026: A Strategic Transition and the Quest for the Eternal Belt
As of 2026, Ali Gürbüz remains at the center of the wrestling world’s attention, characterized by a major career shift and a renewed focus on his physical form. In April 2026, Gürbüz made headlines with his high-profile transfer to Kepez Belediyespor, a move aimed at providing him with a fresh institutional framework for his late-career ambitions. Under the sponsorship of the Yıldırım Group, he has tailored his training specifically for the Kırkpınar Golden Belt cycle.
The 2026 season started with a moment of concern when Ali suffered a severe muscle cramp during a tense final against the rising star Enes Doğan at the Kepez Oil Wrestling tournament. However, demonstrating his trademark resilience, he made a triumphant return just weeks later. In May 2026, he dominated the 350th Kabulbaba Oil Wrestling Festival, defeating Okan Yavaş in the final. This “comeback” performance is widely seen by analysts as a clear signal that the “Mega Star” is in peak condition for the upcoming grand championships.
Personal Life and Carrying the Family Torch
Outside the wrestling ring, Ali Gürbüz leads a grounded life centered around his family. He married Zeliha Kesik in 2016, and the couple has a son, Recep Gürbüz (born in 2017), named after Ali’s late father. The young Recep is already a figure of interest for wrestling enthusiasts, as he represents the potential fourth generation of this wrestling dynasty. Ali is highly respected in the Turkish sports community not just for his strength, but for his humility and his commitment to the “Pehlivan” ethics, which emphasize character as much as physical power.
