Justice and Development Party (AK Parti): A Comprehensive Biography
The Justice and Development Party (AK Parti) is the political organization that has left the greatest mark on 21st-century Turkish politics, holding power longer than any other party in the country’s History. Founded on August 14, 2001, the party has played a transformative role in Turkish political life through its “conservative democratic” identity.
This article details the history, leadership, and key milestones of the AK Parti from its inception to the present day.
Establishment and the “Virtuous Movement”
The foundations of the AK Parti were laid by a group of politicians from the “National Outlook” (Millî Görüş) tradition who identified themselves as “Reformists” (Yenilikçiler).
- Founding Date: Established on August 14, 2001, under the leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
- The Founding Core: The “Virtuous Movement” (Erdemliler Hareketi), led by figures such as Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Abdullah Gül, and Bülent Arınç, formed the backbone of the party.
- Name and Emblem: While officially named the Justice and Development Party, the party uses the abbreviation “AK Parti” (the word ‘ak’ meaning white or pure in Turkish). Its emblem is a lightbulb, symbolizing “clarity and enlightenment.”
Years in Power and Major Milestones
Only 15 months after its establishment, the AK Parti came to power alone in its very first election.
- The November 3, 2002 Elections: The party won 34% of the vote and secured 365 seats in parliament. Due to a political ban, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan could not initially run for office; however, he entered parliament after a by-election in Siirt in 2003 and became Prime Minister.
- The Closure Case (2008): On March 14, 2008, the Chief Public Prosecutor of the Court of Cassation filed a lawsuit to close the party on the grounds that it had become a “center of anti-secular activities.” The Constitutional Court ruled against closing the party but decided to cut its treasury grants.
- System Change: Following the 2017 referendum, Turkey transitioned to the “Presidential Government System.” Recep Tayyip Erdoğan became the first president under this new system.
Leadership and Chairmen
Three different names have served as the Chairman of the AK Parti:
- Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (2001–2014): The founding chairman. He stepped down after being elected President (due to constitutional requirements at the time).
- Ahmet Davutoğlu (2014–2016): Took over the leadership following Erdoğan’s election to the presidency.
- Binali Yıldırım (2016–2017): Led the party after Davutoğlu’s resignation.
- Erdoğan’s Return (2017–Present): After the 2017 constitutional amendments allowed presidents to maintain party affiliation, Erdoğan was re-elected as Chairman.
Ideological Stance and Symbols
The party officially defines its ideology as Conservative Democracy. Its political motto, often symbolized by the “Rabia” gesture, emphasizes “One Nation, One Flag, One Homeland, One State.”
Today, the AK Parti remains the leading force in Turkey’s administration as the primary member of the People’s Alliance (Cumhur İttifakı).
